AGBU Austria celebrates the “Old New Year”

8 February 2018

Veterans-Volunteers gathering:

On the 23th of December 2017, AGBU Austria’s former committee members were invited to meet with AGBU Austria’s current volunteers. It was a meeting of generations, exchange of stories, experiences as well as presents!

Old New Year:

AGBU Austria’s “Old New Year“ eve was a celebration of tradition and culture that has echoed within the community long after the 14th of January.

The Chapter’s committee took a new approach to such evenings and the guests appreciated every bit of it. The aim was not only to entertain, but to preserve, celebrate and to simultaneously educate about Armenian heritage.

Each aspect of the evening was presented in an informative and tasteful manner. Pierre Kazezian explained the root of the “old new Year” and all the traditions surrounding it. In the course of the evening, he presented background and fun facts about each component of the menu, which mainly comprised traditional Armenian dishes.

Tigran Keryan talked about the origins of Armenian dancing, how it branched out and took the present forms that we now know and cherish. Then he translated the talk into action and instructed some steps to the guests who were eager to try the tamzara and gyovnd-ververi dances.
