The people of Armenia have taken the future course of our nation in a new direction. Since April 13, 2018, they have demonstrated their commitment to non-violent civic engagement through peaceful demonstrations and organized protests, never wavering in their resolve, even in the face of an uncertain outcome. Their unity of purpose has inspired hope and is laying the foundation for strong democratic institutions under Rule of Law. Equally important, the world has taken note of the democratic spirit of Armenia’s citizens and their potential to effect constructive change with maturity and wisdom. This alone gives cause for optimism and national pride.
The Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) will continue to support the values that have propelled this historical movement—one that has led to a peaceful resolution, with the decision by former President Serzh Sargsyan to honor the voice of the people.
The next few days, weeks and months remain critical. The work ahead will require the same forbearance and thoughtful activism to achieve national unity. It is necessary to forge strong ties of civil discourse and ensure the strength of our democratic institutions so that capable leaders can be accountable to the citizens and translate democratic ideals into practical policies for security and lasting prosperity. These are the underpinnings of a strong and free society.
As we commemorate the events of April 24, 1915, we are reminded of just how far we have come as a people to overcome the tragedies and challenges of the past. That same spirit of determination must now inform our future.
Déclaration de l’UGAB concernant les événements en Arménie
Le peuple d’Arménie a tracé un nouveau sillon pour notre nation. Depuis le 13 avril 2018, il a mené avec détermination une action citoyenne non-violente, par le biais de manifestations pacifiques et d’une opposition organisée, sans ne jamais se résigner malgré l’incertitude. Leur unité suscite l’espoir et constitue une base solide pour des institutions fortes, démocratiques et respectueuses de l’Etat de droit. Les citoyens d’Arménie ont ainsi montré au Monde leur attachement à un idéal démocratique et leur capacité à construire le changement, avec maturité et sagesse. Tout cela encourage l’optimisme et la fierté.
L’Union Générale Arménienne de Bienfaisance (UGAB) continuera à promouvoir les valeurs à l’origine de ce mouvement historique – qui s’est acheminé vers une résolution pacifique, après que Serge Sarkissian décide de se conformer à la clameur populaire.
Les prochains jours, semaines et mois qui nous attendent seront cruciaux. Le travail à accomplir nécessitera patience et pragmatisme pour parvenir à l’unité nationale. Il est aujourd’hui primordial de renforcer le débat public et fortifier nos institutions démocratiques afin que les responsables politiques puissent rendre compte aux citoyens et traduire cet idéal démocratique par des politiques publiques en faveur d’une sécurité et d’un avenir pérennes. Ce sont les fondements d’une société forte et libre.
Alors que nous commémorons les événements du 24 avril 1915, nous nous rappelons le chemin parcouru par notre peuple pour surmonter les tragédies et défis du passé. C’est cet esprit de détermination qui doit aujourd’hui façonner notre futur.
