Joint Statement to the European Commission on the Occasion of the 101st Anniversary of the Genocide of 1915

22 April 2016

On April 24, people around the world will mark the 101st anniversary of the 1915 Genocide of the Armenians, Assyrians and Pontic Greeks. The event has shaped the destiny of these peoples, of Turkey and of the rest of Europe throughout the 20th century. Unfortunately,  the legacy of the Genocide has not been fully addressed, and its effects are still with us today.

Last year much of the world marked the centenary of the event. Notably, the European Parliament unanimously passed a commemorative resolution on 15 April 2015, and invited the European Commission to join in the commemorations. Regrettably, the European Commission declined, citing disagreement among some member states.

We call upon Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, to stand up for European values and interests and mark the memory of the Genocide on April 24, 2016.
