Armenian communities of Bulgaria and Romania boost cooperation

Press Releases - On March 29, 2014 a meeting was held between the Union of Armenians in Romania led by the its President, Varujan Vosganian and representatives of the Armenian organizations in Bulgaria. The meeting was held under the auspices of the Diocesan Council of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Bulgaria. AGBU Plovdiv and Rousse Chapters was a key initiator of the event and coordinated its organization.

The meeting took a number of key decisions relating to the politics and to the recognition of the genocide and decided to reinforce cooperation on cultural matters, through the exchange of musical ensembles and through joint cultural programmes. It also decided to initiate joint media projects.

Regarding political matters, meeting participants issued a protest to the recent attack on the Armenian village of Kessab, in Syria, by a groups entering from Turkey. It also took the following decisions:

  • To draw up a list of cities in Bulgaria and Romania which have not adopted the Declaration condemning the Armenian genocide;
  • To agree to sign onto the AGBU Europe appeal for commemorations in Turkey and recognition of the genocide, and to promote this appeal on the Internet.
  • To draw up a list of proposals for joint initiatives between the two communities of Bulgaria and Romania, which Mr. Varujan Vosganian will present to the Committee on Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide , to be held in Armenia in May 2014.
